Cyprus & Malta eSIM 2026: Mediterranean Guide

📖 8 min🏖️ Cyprus & MaltaThe Alosea teamUpdated 2026-05-26

Heading to Cyprus (Larnaca, Paphos, Ayia Napa, Limassol), a culture trip to Valletta (Malta), or combining both Mediterranean EU islands? Cyprus and Malta are the EU's two island states in the eastern Mediterranean, sharing a Neolithic heritage (Choirokoitia, Hal Saflieni Hypogeum — among the world's oldest sites), successive civilisations (Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Venetians, Ottomans, British) and a warm hospitality tradition. Shared quirk with the UK: type G plugs (3 flat pins), legacy of British colonisation. To use Bolt, translate a menu in Greek or Maltese, or book a Gozo-Malta ferry, your phone is going to do the heavy lifting. Activating a Cyprus + Malta eSIM BEFORE you board means you walk out of Larnaca (LCA), Paphos (PFO) or Malta (MLA) already online. In this guide: how much data, how to install, local carriers, practical tips (EUR, G plugs, languages), 7 UNESCO sites, off-the-beaten-path experiences, food.

WHY AN eSIM

Why an eSIM for Cyprus & Malta

Cyprus (south only, Republic of Cyprus) and Malta are EU and Schengen members. Roaming is included in most European plans, BUT with a data cap (5-25 GB). HEADS-UP: Northern Cyprus (Turkish self-proclaimed zone, not internationally recognised except by Turkey) is technically OUTSIDE the EU — your plan may switch to non-EU roaming if you cross over, or even register on Turkish operators. An Alosea eSIM avoids overages. Your home number stays active for banking SMS. Installation in 2 min via QR. And concretely on arrival at the airport? You can buy a local physical SIM at the counter, but expect to pay around €10 just for the SIM card itself — on top of the data plan. With an Alosea eSIM, you walk off the plane already connected.

HOW MUCH IT COSTS

Travel eSIM pricing

A Cyprus + Malta travel eSIM is in an accessible price range. Price depends on data volume, validity (7/15/30 days), and Europe bundle covering Cyprus and Malta. A local physical SIM (Cyta, Epic Cyprus, GO Malta, Melita) requires in-store activation with passport.

MUST-SEE PLACES

Top iconic places

01

Paphos Archaeological Park (Cyprus)

UNESCO since 1980. Exceptional Greco-Roman site: House of Dionysus with floor mosaics (2nd-3rd century, among Mediterranean's finest), Tombs of the Kings (4th-3rd century BC Hellenistic necropolis), Roman odeon, Apollo's sanctuary. Mythical birthplace of Aphrodite (Petra tou Romiou rock nearby).

In Greek mythology, Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, was born from sea foam (« aphros ») at Petra tou Romiou, 25 km from Paphos. The site became an ancient pilgrimage: Pausanias and Strabo mention it. The Aphrodite temple at Palaepaphos (Old Paphos), now in ruins, was one of the Greek world's largest religious centres.

02

Valletta (Malta)

UNESCO since 1980. Fortified capital built 1565-1571 by the Order of the Knights of St. John (later Order of Malta) after the Great Ottoman Siege, on the Sceberras peninsula. Grid plan, massive bastions, Grand Master's Palace, St. John's Co-Cathedral (insanely baroque interior with marble inlaid floors of the knights).

Valletta's St. John's Co-Cathedral houses Caravaggio's absolute masterpiece: « The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist » (1608), the only painting Caravaggio signed (his signature in the saint's blood), painted while he himself was a Knight of Malta before being expelled for brawling and fleeing. One of Caravaggio's greatest works and one of the world's greatest Baroque paintings.

Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (Malta)

UNESCO since 1980. Neolithic underground sanctuary on 3 levels (-10 m), carved into limestone around 4,000-2,500 BC. Collective burial of 7,000 individuals found. Mysterious acoustics (110 Hz resonance in Oracle Room). ULTRA-LIMITED visits (max 10 people/hour, book 3 months ahead).

Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is the world's only known underground prehistoric temple. Discovered by chance in 1902 during sewer works. Acoustics scientifically studied: a male voice produced in the Oracle Room resonates at 110 Hz, a frequency studies suggest may have an altered-consciousness psychological effect. The famous « Sleeping Lady » figurine was discovered here.

Megalithic Temples of Malta

UNESCO since 1980/1992 (7 sites). Ġgantija (Gozo, 3,600-3,200 BC, among the world's oldest stone monuments, predating the pyramids), Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra (south coast, solstice alignments), Tarxien (Sleeping Lady).

Ġgantija temple on Gozo (« giant » in Maltese — reference to the legend of a giantess who allegedly carried the stones) is older than Stonehenge (3,100 BC) and the Giza Pyramids (2,600 BC). One of the world's oldest still-standing stone monuments, with 5 m / 50-tonne slabs.

05

Choirokoitia (Cyprus)

UNESCO since 1998. Neolithic village from the 7th millennium BC, one of Europe's oldest. 70 circular stone-and-cob huts on a defensive hill. Visitable reconstructions. Extraordinary testimony to Cyprus's first settlement, coming from the Levant.

Choirokoitia is one of Europe's oldest villages and one of the earliest testimonies of Neolithic sedentarisation on an island. Its inhabitants, arriving by sea around 7,000 BC, brought with them domesticated goats, sheep and pigs — proof of very early Mediterranean navigation.

Mdina (Malta) and Gozo

Mdina: Malta's former fortified capital (1,000 inhabitants), « silent city », intact medieval cobbled streets. Panoramic island view. St. Paul's Cathedral, noble palaces. Gozo: Malta's sister island (25-min ferry), more rural, Victoria citadel, Ta' Pinu basilica, Ramla beach.

Mdina (« city » in Arabic, common root with Medina) is the name given by the Arabs who occupied Malta from 870 to 1090. Before them: Phoenician then Roman Melite. After the Arabs: Normans, Angevins, Knights Hospitaller. Exceptional reflection of Mediterranean stratifications in a single site.

Painted Churches of Troodos (Cyprus)

UNESCO since 1985/2001. 10 Byzantine churches in remote Troodos mountain villages (1,952 m max), entirely decorated with Byzantine frescoes from 11th to 17th century. Rustic architecture (slate-tiled pitched roofs protecting the frescoes) hiding pictorial treasures.

These rural churches preserved Byzantine iconography during 400 years of Latin (Lusignan), Venetian then Ottoman occupation that elsewhere eradicated Byzantine art. They constitute the largest still-standing Byzantine wall-painting set outside Greece. Most famous: Asinou (Panagia tis Asinou) with perfectly preserved 12th-century frescoes.
