SUGARLOAF Pão de Açúcar (396m, 2-section cable car since 1912, world-iconic view). COPACABANA + IPANEMA + Leblon beaches. Tijuca Forest (world's largest urban forest). MARACANÃ stadium (1950, 1950 + 2014 World Cup finals).
CHRIST REDEEMER on Corcovado was commissioned in 1922 (Brazilian independence centennial 1822) and inaugurated 1931, after 9 years construction. Designed by Brazilian ENGINEER Heitor da Silva Costa but statue mainly work of FRENCH SCULPTOR Paul Landowski (Rodin student, sculpted head + hands in Paris Boulogne-Billancourt studio, then shipped pieces to Brazil for assembly). In 2007 elected one of 7 new world wonders (1st global election by phone/internet, 100 million votes). Cristo is struck by lightning ~6 times per year.
