Santo Domingo holds the record for the MOST « FIRSTS » in the Americas: 1st European-founded city (5 August 1496), 1st paved street (Calle Las Damas 1502), 1st cathedral (Primada de América 1514, where Pope Paul VI said Mass 1965), 1st hospital (Hospital San Nicolás 1503), 1st university (Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino 1538), 1st fortress (Ozama 1502), 1st monastery, 1st stations of cross. The city remains one of the world's most preserved Spanish colonial ensembles.
